Harvey and Horses
I took Harvey out this past New Year's Day for a van ride. We stopped off for treats for Harvey at a pet store he enjoyed. I also wanted to go for brunch but everything was closed. We drove acrosss to the North Shoer of Kamloops and made our way to the Rez in search of horses. Harvey always loved seeing horses and it was a nice warm day.
We found a group of 5 or 6 horses near the road and pulled over. Harvey got out and made his way close to the fence where the horses caught sight of him and4 of them made their was over to him. He stood near the fence calm and still and the horses leaned their heads over the fence to sniff him. Horsesd always seemed to be quite curious about him and he was equally as curious.
One large male seemed especially interested in putting his nose close to Harvey. IHe moved his nose over Harvey's body slowly and deliberatly and I know that the horse could smell/sense the cancer in Harvey's body. The other 3 smelled him over but not as intently as the black and white one. He smelled Harvey all over from head to tow, slowly, calmly and Harvey accepted this once over.Harvey had always been amazing with horses. Going to see them in different areas around Kamloops was always one of our favorite things to do. Once we went up to the flats behind Mt. Paul and found some wildish rez horses. There were 6 or 8 near a fence beside the road. As we approached the horses backed off. I knew Harvey wanted to see them so I took off his leash and walked away. Harvey stayed near the fence and the horses came back. They all shared greetings and sniffs until they wandered away asd a group. Harvey came back to me and seemed happy with this experience. We did this a lot.
After Harvey passed, I bought a bag of apples and went back to where Harvey and I had gone on New Yera's day. I wanted to thank the horses for thier kindness and friendship. The same group was there - even the black and white one. I spemnt half an hour sharing shunks of apples with them as a sign of gratitude. They were calm and kind and loving towards my boy - and I thank them for that. I plamn to go back and visit them again.
