Sunsets
From the day Harvey came into my life, we went on the hunt for sunsets. I don't know if it was him that led me to them, or if it was a shared love of beauty and thankfulness for having made it through another day.
Watching a sunset is inherintly calming and serene. Seeing the sun slowly sink is a sign of success. A time where we can sit together, not saying a word, but both taking in and enjoying the beaty.
We always looked for new places to see sunsets from. Hiking up hills, or driving in the van, we searched for the best place to watch the sun sink below the horizon. One of the places we watched the most sunsets from was the river. Each summer was filled with afternoons and evenings at our beach, alone. Feeling the days heat slip away and seeing the sun sink before us and seemingly into tthe river was almost a ritual.
The Golden Hour - when the sun bathes everything in a bright golden light. Everything glows and shines. Once the sun is below the horizon and the sky darkens - it becomes the blue hour. The sky becomes a deep midnight blue and the stars and moon appear against it.
Thinking about it now - it was less about the sunsets and more about spending time with my best friend and watching him enjoy nature and his surroundings. Silently observoing the world and giving thanks for a day well spent.
I still go and look for places to watch sunsets from - but without him by my side it all seems a little more meaningless. Although, I need to remind myself to keep doing the rituals that we did together as a tribute to him and his life. I owe it to Harvey to live my life as well as I can.
